Incidence of Spontaneous Tumors in Sprague-Dawley Rats

Survey of spontaneous tumors on the old sprague-Dawley rats which were untreated control animals of a 2 year carcinogenicity study was performed. Total 102 animals(male 51, female 51) were used in this study. 41 male rats(80%) and 47 female rats(92%) had tumors. In male rats 60 primary tumors were found and 72% of the tumors was diagnosed as benign. In female rats 99 primary tumors were found and 85% of the tumors was benign. The most frequent tumor in male rat was pituitary tumor. In female rats it was mammary gland tumor and the next was pituitary tumor.
